Chain maintenance with Flowerpower Wax: tips for optimal effectiveness

In recent years, more and more cyclists are choosing wax-based lubricants for their drivetrains, appreciating their cleanliness, efficiency and reduced component wear. However, one of the most common concerns is rust protection, especially when riding in the rain or with high humidity.

A cyclist's experience with Flowerpower Wax

A user recently told us about his experience with our Flowerpower Wax after having previously used other wax-type chain lubricants. The cyclist, who uses two gravel bikes for off-road riding and daily commuting, found the lubrication to hold up very well but had noticed occasional rust forming on the chain and cassette after riding in the rain, both with the previous wax and with Flowerpower Wax.

Why does rust form?

Wax-based lubricants, such as Flowerpower Wax, contain wax particles in aqueous suspension, which makes them environmentally friendly and very clean, but they offer less protection from rust than traditional mineral oils. This is because waxes tend to repel dirt and moisture, but do not form a continuous, waterproof seal like thick oils.

How to limit rust formation

Here are some practical tips to reduce the risk of rust and keep your transmission efficient for longer:

  1. Dry the chain: after every ride in rain or high humidity, pass a dry cloth over the chain to eliminate any water residue.

  2. Remove excess lubricant: Flowerpower Wax remains softer than other waxes and, once applied, forms a protective film. To further enhance protection, wipe off any excess with a rag after application – this will spread the wax over the entire surface of the chain, forming a continuous protection.

  3. Reapply lube only when necessary – there is no need to reapply Flowerpower Wax after every ride in the rain unless the chain starts to make noise, which is a sign of insufficient lubrication.

Bottom line

Flowerpower Wax provides excellent lubrication and low dirt build-up, but requires some care to minimise the risk of rust in wet conditions. By following a few simple steps, you can get the most out of your wax lube and prolong the life of your drivetrain.

If you have tried Flowerpower Wax in tough conditions, let us know about your experience!
